Unscheduled Outage

Filed under: Technical, Web — Joey @ 4:33 am

Joeyhagedorn.com was unavailable today for approximately 1:10 beginning at 3:10:43 AM and continuing until 4:19:00 AM due to an unannounced IP address change and corresponding DNS update lag.

It is unlikely any users were affected by this outage, but if some were, I’m sorry.

I was listening to my iPod

Filed under: Life — Joey @ 1:49 pm

Dear Random Person I passed crossing the street today;

It appears that you tried to say something to me today while crossing Goodwin street at Green. I apologize for completely ignoring you until you were past me and I realized you might be talking to me. This is the second time this week something like this has happened to me. I was listening to my iPod and could not hear anything other than the Eagles because of my in-ear headphones. This is the price I pay for incredible musical fidelity.

Real Words

Sometimes I mix up words. Like Authoritive and Authoritative. The key difference being Authoritative is a word, and Authoritive is not.

Always Exercise Restraint when bidding on eBay

Filed under: Life — Joey @ 12:23 am

It is important to exercise restraint when using eBay. I have succeeded thus far; but I may buy some LEDs from Hong Kong.

I went kiting on Tuesday. It was warm and amaizngly fun. I really don’t like my winder though. I need to get one of those discontinued SkyReels. I’ve really been in to hard-to-get items lately. my current winder , is like, hard to use, and i’ve gotten hurt using it– just bad, though it was fun to buy at that kite shop in Oak Park.

It was super windy on Tuesday and I let the kite pull me on my bike– and that was quite awesome. I desparately want to try it on a paved surface though, because on the grass it was kinda bumpy, and I had to avoid trees. Maybe Assembly Hall parking lot next time?

But the experience was not without incident. My kite was in the sky, and it was super windy, and I had to go eat dinner then go to CS273 HBS, but i could not reel it in. It was impossible to get back in–however hard I tried. It took like an hour, and I ended up using my bike for leverage. I ended up eating dinner late and missing the HBS. suk. I need to plan for this in the future, or get a mega efficient reel–and more string, because lots of kite string is fun.

Today I got a call from Stephanie Frankhauser at L&S Clock Repair! It is done! I went and picked up my alarm clock, and it is quite ready for another many years of service. I got to meet Lee Wilson, aka L of L&S, he was pretty cool too. I did not realize that its completely normal to have to twist the clock a bit when setting it down to get it going once again you wind it.

I am working on a 1px border on images, but I am unsure exactly how to do it right now best.

<Insert other boring story about getting the wrong sauce on my wings at dinner here.>

I purchased a couple of books at Barnes & Noble this week; I am excited to start Richard Feynman’s sequel to “Surely You’re Joking Mr. Feynman”; What Do You Care What Other People Think” I’ll do that now.

What happened to updating during the week? Total Busyness. Sorry.

An Illustrated Story

Filed under: Creative, Life — Joey @ 6:38 pm

I spent a lot of time in my room looking out the window and working on my computer.

There was much to do. On Thursday Night I stayed the night inside Siebel Center working away. Fortunately though I got to see Dawn from the Balcony of Siebel, which was kind of cool. I really don’t want to stay up that late anymore though.

When I got home I found my Clock was still not back from being cleaned. Maybe I should call them up? I had to look at how the time was flying by on my Nixie clock instead.

Finally on the weekend, I spent some time doing things like getting lunch, and I ran across an ATM where I could set my preferences! This was a wondrous discovery as it appears I will not need to tell them again that I both want a receipt and that I speak English. I like dim lighting on weekends too.

I tried to go geocaching this weekend–I really wanted to go, but unfortunately due to the snow and it getting dark before I got outside, I failed. I did watch some TV though, through my VCR on the projector, because this is easily accomplished at night.

2.0.1 did fix that XML-RPC problem.

The End.

Please feel free to continue this story in comments.

Winter weeks provide for excitement; positive and negative.

Filed under: Life, Technical — Joey @ 6:20 pm

Oh My! What a week it has been! But today it has been snowing intensely, on and off, so there is not much accumulation, but it is a happy time anyway. Fortunately I’ve finally got a few moments to write about it all.

I’m really excited that ;Login: has been published with an article on which I am a co-author. My primary contribution was the graphics– but still; it is quite exciting.

It is that time of year again when I have a great desire to work on electronic projects. I have found a number of sources for really cool components and kits and things. The biggest problem is getting PCBs made, because only needing one, it is kind of expensive. I am also going to have to learn how to work with and program micro-controllers now– but that should be exciting. Does anybody want to go in on a POV toy with me? I want to do this SMT kind instead of the kit mentioned at the end–and also add an acceleration sensor so it draws things in the right direction i’ll build it, I just need to buy in bulk.

The first project of the season is this little LED output board for a project my friend John is working on. I fab’ed it up this weekend and wrote some test software for it last night. Even though it is not much, it’s just so fun to make LEDs blink. I had some issues with Cocoa Threads and timing– so I ended up using an NStimer to multiplex the LED blinking. A picture follows but also check out album Electronics for more photos.

Also, I upgraded to WordPress 2.0.1 this morning. I sure hope it fixes that XML-RPC problem I had before.

Stress relief

Filed under: Creative — Joey @ 1:05 am

Every so often, after an amazingly terrible Monday, one needs some stress relief. Today I took a 10 minute break and fabricated one of those 555-timer blinking LED circuits on my tiny proto-board. The “hello world” of circuits; so confidence building, so classic. Oh how it is a wondrous thing, sitting there in my window, blinking its little red LED away.

Ah the therapy of circuit construction.

Now back to the paper writing, schoolwork, and other sundry tasks…
