disjoint thoughts are fun.

Filed under: Life — Joey @ 7:10 pm

Today I got a haircut on the first try, without weeks of procrastination. My mother will be proud. Though the haircut isn’t an especially good one, I appear less of a miscreant.

Stopping at Walgreens for a toothbrush holder, realizing Meijer would be a better bet for that, I instead bought gummibears and dove chocolates.

Whats up with dove chocolates having subversive messages inside like:
“naughty can be nice” or “send a love letter this week” all trying to be distracting from my schoolwork and things. I prefer Nantucket Nectars’ quotes like :
“There are 125.8 persons per square mile on Nantucket.”
or Snapples’
“You share your birthday with at least 9 million other people in the world”

The other day I bought Dove soap I think because I am mixing up the branding of Dove soap and Dove chocolates.

I think I may have a phobia of ionizing radiation.

I’ll go back to eating gummibears and chocolates now.

alone

Filed under: Life — Joey @ 3:44 pm

I prefer to eat alone. This is certainly the case. There is one small problem; I have no capability to get up and tend to the inevitable needs that will arise throughout the meal. I may run out of water, or need an extra napkin, or want to go wash my hands, but cannot leave my seat for I cannot leave my food unattended. I encountered this exact situation as I was dining at Chipotle today.

Once I ordered at Noodles, then went to the bathroom to wash my hands after leaving my # on the table. Somebody had eaten one of my potstickers when I had returned. That was terrible.

In happier news, my new alarm clock woke me up today:

I still need to talk to the gentleman in Urbana about a proper cleaning. I am very pleased with this clock, and though it shows a bit of wear, the tick isn’t too loud, and the chime is beautiful.

Back in Urbana, Server Nominal

Filed under: Life, Technical, Web — Joey @ 11:38 pm

I’m back in Urbana, and things are getting unpacked. Its nice to be here, though it was awesome to be home too. Unpacking, etc…

It appears that the server is operating nominally and DNS seems to have tricked down, so I’m going to worry about getting some food now instead.

Tomorrow there is Open Skate at the Ice Arena from 7:30-9:30. I think I’m going to go, as I shouldn’t have too much to do.

The drive back was absolutely awesome. It felt like–like I should drive some more.

Steak & Shake is calling.

Scheduled Downtime

Filed under: Technical, Web — Joey @ 3:16 am

On Sunday evening between the hours of 4 pm and ~8 pm JoeyHagedorn.com will be unavailable due to scheduled server maintenance. I will be relocating the server to a new hosting facility for better network bandwidth well as installing some software updates. The server’s IP address will be changing, so it is unclear when the machine will become accessible again from the internet, but I intend to update the status page with the IP address when it becomes available before DNS catches up. Once relocated it could take as much as 24 hours for the change to propagate, but more likely it will be between 1 and 6.

Additionally, everyone should know not to leave a glass of applejuice out, even if it is only a small amount, because it will quickly turn in to a disgusting moldy mess.

Link Explosion!

Filed under: Life, Photography — Joey @ 10:30 pm

An alarm clock is on its way. I plan to take it to a gentleman in Urbana to be sure it is well oiled and cleaned before using it extensively. The level of anticipation is very high.

ANL was fun; now time to go back to school and unfortunately I have missed the elusive Dama Dama. I still need to write some documentation

A few new photographs are posted–also the captions are automatically displayed with the photos. I’ve finally posted a few photos I’ve taken with my Wide Angle lens– though I am disappointed I have not yet taken more.

Thanks to Paul for reminding me to post stuff. He’s been doing good posting on his blog while in Japan. You should really check out his adventures at A fresh serving of Japan.

Thank you Zathros for posting back in September about Paul’s trip to Japan. I am looking forward to hearing the stories all next semester now that he’ll be around again.

So, there are many things to be looking forward to at school– too bad academic stuff is not high on that list.

What’s in a uname()?

Filed under: Life, Mac, Technical — Joey @ 2:25 pm

Just before closing out his speech, Jobs kept to tradition and announced that he had “One More Thing…”

He said the 15-inch PowerBook product line would be going away in favor of a new “Mac Book Pro.” The laptop features a 15.4-inch display and is a hair thinner than the 17″ PowerBook. Additionally, it’s about 4-5 times as fast as the previous PowerBooks, Jobs said.

Mac Book Pro includes a built-in iSight, IR sensor, Apple Remote, and new Power Adapter. It weighs 5.6lbs and will ship with Front Row software. A 1.67 Core Duo model will retail for $1999, while a high-end 1.83GHz model will sell for $2499.

Apple will begin taking orders for the Mac Book Pro today for shipments beginning next month.

Ok. So we were expecting this. But “MacBook Pro”??? come on! PowerBook was so much a better name. I am excited about that new power connector though. Really excited. I guess the dual-cores will help performance too– but man, that power connector is going to be awesome when I accidentally pull on the cord and it doesn’t break solder joints on the motherboard.

I’ve been hearing of the Monsoon Season

Filed under: Life — Joey @ 4:59 pm

Yesterday was a great day. I have been listening to a purloined pre-release copy of the lost larrikin long play compact disc while driving places in my automobile. Charlie Deets has astounded me with this work. I recommend purchasing a copy through the iTunes Music Store or directly from the man himself when the disc becomes available. You can also check out one of the tracks on 75 Minutes this week.

Scott Dixon also beat me in an intense game of chess at the creepy coffee house.
I updated my academic schedule for this next semester, which can be found in the Deliverables section. It is useful for scheduling and stalking.

I ran across a website that had completely unrelated MIDI background music simply because it could. Yeah 1996!

Other things happened too!

I am looking forward to the drive back to school one week from today. Though there is great sadness associated with leaving the great people around here, I am happy both to spend two hours alone in my car, as well as start a new semester.

Today, so far, I just worked. There were two bugs, but I ignored them.

Mac OS X emacs key-bindings

Filed under: Mac, Technical — Joey @ 4:55 pm

One extra random feature of Mac OS X that I am afraid many people don’t know about is its pre-configured support for emacs key-bindings. These only work in Cocoa applications, but fortunately that means most applications today. Sorry Firefox. A few keyboard shortcuts for text navigation can really speed up usage. When I read today:

Secret shortcuts. Hidden helpers. Mysterious menus. You could spend months tracking down all the undocumented features tucked away in Mac OS X 10.4, Apple‘s newest operating system. But chances are, you’re too busy using Tiger for more-important tasks—such as doing your job. So Macworld sent in a team of specially trained spies to uncover Tiger’s deepest, darkest secrets.

Tiger Secrets Declassified [Macworld]

I thought “Woa, somebody beat me to posting about this at such a random time!” Then I read the article and unfortunately none of the tips that were important to me made it.

I will outline some of the shortcuts I recommend using:

  • Ctrl-A : Jump to beginning of line
  • Ctrl-E : Jump to end of line
  • Ctrl-K : Cut from cursor to end of line (useful for delete)
  • Ctrl-Y : Paste that test you just cut

Also, hold Option and select text in Tiger on multiple lines for this cool box-selection thing, where the cursor will turn in to a cross-hair and select just the contents of the box, not the whole line.

you can also type bindkey in a terminal for a complete list:

joey% bindkey
"^@" set-mark-command
"^A" beginning-of-line
"^B" backward-char
"^D" delete-char-or-list
"^E" end-of-line
"^F" forward-char
[continued....]

I realize there are many customizations possible, and more to this– but if you are interested you should check out Mac OS X Hints and do some searching. Now you know its possible.

(I know this post was egregiously unnecessary and somewhat offtopic. I just wanted to show off some new formatting stuff I hooked up in the CSS last night.)
