WordPress Upgraded

Filed under: Technical, Web — Joey @ 11:39 pm

Today I completed the upgrade to WordPress 2.0. The upgrade was pretty painless after following the instructions and I am only encountering one significant problem. I use the WPG2 plugin to connect WordPress to Gallery2, and unforunately when I post with MarsEdit the <wpg2> tags are filtered out. I can use the tags when I use the web interface– but that simply won’t work for me. It appears to be directly related to this problem with people using the Markdown plugin.

Day-After-Christmas Feast

Filed under: Life — Joey @ 9:47 pm

I was part of a team of eight that put together a feast for two. Jessica Dixon orchestrated the team and selected the menu items. I was happy to help prepare the soup; I pealed, sliced, and chopped many apples for this dish. Our two guests arrived very well dressed and enjoyed the meal greatly.

I hope these pictures speak for themselves.

Like Woa; I just fixed Jessica’s Laptop

Filed under: Technical — Joey @ 1:42 pm

Woa, that was intense. I should have taken pictures. I just repaired Jessica Dixon’s laptop. The power connector inside was shattered, and all floppy inside. I stripped the Gateway 400SD4 down to the bare plastic case, superglued the connector back to its original form, then reflowed the solder on the motherboard/power connector joints to guarantee a solid connection.

It appears to be reliably fixed now. there was a moment of scariness when i thought it didn’t work– but i simply had some superglue on the barrel connector, creating an insulating layer on one portion of the barrel connector when it was rotated. After cleaning that off with my pocket knife, it appears to be like new. Now on to re-install the Zavisin’s computer. That thing looks like it might be more difficult than it appears at first glance.

There is word of Greek food, which would make everything better though. I can’t wait.

does this title look impressive in the new font?

Filed under: Life — Joey @ 4:00 am

I must say that in my head I virtually* wrote this post at least 3 separate times, each about a different topic, each worded exquisitely. Instead of relating one of those brilliant narratives, my creative process condemns me to producing a mediocre juxtaposition of a few sundry thoughts.

Merry Christmas. I’ve been having a pretty great Christmas, family and friends have been wonderful. I have communicated well with many people, and received many beautiful gifts (that I will post about later.) I feel bad though about spending money–because it, when spent, does not bring me the sort of thing I am seeking.

The ticking of the loud clock clock clock has not yet stop stop stopped.

*above, the word “virtually” is used not as the common expression, but more as if I actually wrote it out in my head three times, even though I did not.

am i awake? what time is it?

Filed under: Life, Technical — Joey @ 2:29 am

Today I think I got awstats working. I’ll have to wait and see tomorrow if it updated over night as it is supposed to. I use Launchd Editor to setup a process that runs every night at 3am to update the statistics stuff and I am slightly weary it didn’t quite get it right.

I have enlisted a temporary alarm clock to fill in while I am searching for a permanent replacement to the one that went out during the middle of finals week. This one meets some of the requirements; oldness, mechanicalness, cool-lookingness, but it has one major problem. Its freaking loud. I’m not sure how I’m going to be able to sleep with this thing tick tick ticking.

My PowerBook was also acting kind of funny this last week, taking approx 15 seconds to go to sleep– but I think I cured that with a PMU reset. It hurt me to do it, but maybe It won’t freak out and shut itself off anymore when I reach almost zero battery capacity and instead just go to sleep like its supposed to.

The elusive Dama Dama

Filed under: Life — Joey @ 8:52 pm

Today at work I failed to see the elusive white deer for the second day in a row. I saw four of the more common white-tailed brown deer–on the way to work and at lunch–but this is not quite what I was hoping for. On Monday I saw one white deer standing very close to the sidewalk on the way to my car, then a whole herd as I was driving out of the lab. I hope to get some good pictures of them, better pictures than this one I found on the internet:

The naturally light colored deer that are native to Northern Africa, Europe, and parts of Asia have also been sighted (years ago) in my back yard. It seems like they come up near the buildings in the lab after dark in the winter. For this reason I think I have a better chance of seeing them for the short period of time I work over break than when I’m there all summer–but leave before the sun goes down. I’ve got until the 17th or so, thus I think I still have a chance to get some good photos.

the race to ship

Filed under: Technical, Web — Joey @ 2:32 am

joeyhagedorn.com is on schedule to launch for 2006.

There are a large number of changes that need to occur before this site is ready for mass consumption though. Planned changes include:

  • Content in all of the Pages– especially the photo albums, projects, and deliverables
  • New font colors/sizes for the whole site
  • Import all of my old posts from my now deprecated livejournal
  • Finish installing awstats software for statistics and get it working
  • Move to a static front page that includes general “About Me” info and move blog to /blog via a plugin

The software I am using to make this all possible includes but is not limited to:

One major problem I am having is that I cannot access my site from my internal lan due to the routing setup. This will be resolved when i move the server physically (a Power Mac G4/500Mhz AGP, 384MB 640MB Ram, 160GB HD) to Urbana with me, and www.joeyhagedorn.com will get its own public IP.

Home for Christmas

Filed under: Life — Joey @ 2:23 am

I am very glad to be home after all of those finals. It is a very simple condition, that of being in a certain location, but is one of the most powerful conditions there is. It is very cold here, even though winter does not start for approximately 2 days.

Opportunities abound, now that the semester has come to a close. I saw many people in my few travels today.

I also have many things to do now that I am home. I need to purchase a new alarm clock. I am thinking something vintage– like a 1930’s “Big Ben” clock from Westclox– or maybe a Wehrle “Commander.” I would be interested in finding out where I could purchase a nice alarm clock. Preferrably all mechanical.
